Prieuré de Montézargues

Rhône Valley, France

The Prieuré de Montézargues has a rich history dating back to ancient Roman times. Montézargues was originally known as the Grammont Abbey. Records show that in 1199, Guillaume ll and Rostang ll of Sabran added a mill, a supply of water and woodland . The monks who then settled at the priory gained the right to fish in Pujaut Pond. Pope Innocent lll wrote to the Abbot of Grandmont, urging him to host this new community with good grace; he consented. Yet in 1295, only three monks remained....

Today, Prieuré de Montézargues is owned by the renowned Richard family, involved in wine making and wine distribution since 1892. The Richard family is also the proud proprietors of the renowned Château La Nerthe, from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Domaine de La Renjarde from Côtes du Rhône Villages.
